May 2011 was my last perm before my natural hair breakdown. It was easy to manage while transitioning, but once half of the hair was natural, it became difficult. I ended up relaxing it again in 2014. Since then I have been implementing the tips below to prevent that same breakdown.

  1. Surround yourself with other naturals.
    1. They will give you tips on how to manage your hair when it is difficult
  2. Stretch your hair at least once a week or every other week.
    1. This prevents excessive tangles from forming. As a 4c natural this has really helped me to maintain my sanity and hair.
    2. I have attached a post I wrote about, ways to stretch your hair here
  3. Wash your hair when you are in a good mood and have time.
    1. When you are on a time limit, you tend to be more harsh on the hair and want to give up
  4. Never expect your hair to look like others.
    1. This is a big one. Appreciate what you have and understand that one style will not look the same on you.
  5. If your hair is not cooperating have at least 2 go-to hairstyles that takes about 10 minutes
    1. Mine are puffs and the two side twists
